Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Student Publishes Two Stories as Part of Experiential Learning
Claire Smathers, graduate student in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program, co-wrote an article with Stacey Elza as part of her experiential learning. Claire works in Dr. Aaron Robart's lab studying the structure and function of catalytic RNA and RNA-protein complexes but is planning on transitioning into a career in science writing/communication after graduation. Claire has been working with WVU science communicator Stacey Elza to learn about and gain experience in science journalism. During the experience, Claire has been assisting Stacey by interviewing HSC researchers and writing exciting stories about their research. Claire was very excited to be able to work with Stacey on this piece about developments in cancer research at WVU for the WVU Magazine. In addition, Claire wrote an article about Sunil Sharma, MD and his study on vaping-related lung injury in West Virginia. Links to the articles are listed below.
