Health care providers can learn latest trends in technology and patient care during the WVU School of Medicine’s Hal Wanger Family Medicine Conference
The West Virginia University School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine will host the 45th Annual Hal Wanger Family Medicine Conference, Thursday, Oct. 3 – Friday, Oct. 4, at the Morgantown Holiday Inn on Pineview Drive.
The conference will address a more than 24 topics of interest to family physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers. Some topics include rheumatology arthritis, leading an end of life discussion, HIV education to primary health care practitioners, migraine therapy and cardiovascular effects of diabetes drugs.
The conference will also feature a variety of hands-on pre-conference and evening workshops led by experts in the field.

“For almost 50 years we have welcomed all colleagues from all over the region to an up-to-date clinical conference that brings them the latest evidence for providing the best care to their patients,” Dana E. King, M.D., co-director of the Hal Wanger Conference and professor and chair of the WVU Department of Family Medicine, said.
Dorian Williams, M.D., will present “To Simulate… and Beyond! Toys or Educational Apogee?” where he will discuss the advances of simulated patient encounters and how this technology has innovated health care professional education. Dr. Williams is the Mesaros Distinguished Speaker honoring Drs. Paul and Laura Mesaros.
“The Family Medicine profession encompasses the comprehensive care of a diverse patient population with a vast variety of medical conditions,” Erika Bodkins, M.D., conference co-director and assistant professor in the WVU Department of Family Medicine, said. “The conference offers up-to-date medical information in a comfortable and collegial environment all while helping health care providers meet their educational needs.”
The conference is named in honor of Halvard Wanger, M.D., who organized an extensive scientific assembly to celebrate the Eastern Panhandle Medical Association’s 50th anniversary in 1956.
Dr. Wanger directed the annual conference through 1974. In 1975, the WVU Department of Family Medicine assumed responsibility for continuing the fall conference.
