Passions lead Orndorff to serve as Executive Director of Down Syndrome Network of WV

Combining her education in occupational therapy with her personal role as a mother of a child with Down syndrome, Ashley Orndorff has become an influential leader in West Virginia. As the Executive Director of the Down Syndrome Network of West Virginia (DSNWV), Orndorff (Haynes), a 2009 graduate of the WVU occupational therapy program, works to connect families with the resources and supports needed to improve quality of life. Among the resources offered are informational packets for new and expecting families. The DSNWV also works to coordinate with OBGYN practices and birthing centers across the state to provide information as well as serve as a resource for a ‘first call’ after a diagnosis is made.

Resources and support are available to families across the state at no cost thanks to the ongoing support of sponsors and donors. The organization’s largest fundraiser is the Buddy Walk, is held each fall at the State Capitol Complex in Charleston. Families from across West Virginia, and even neighboring states, come together for fun and fellowship, and they have a strong community involvement to promote inclusion and advocate for the needs of people with Down syndrome.

Orndorff was introduced to the DSNWV for support and information following the birth of her daughter, Hannah, seven years ago. Prior to her role with the DSNWV, she spent more than seven years providing occupational therapy services in skilled nursing facilities and long-term care. More recently, she has worked in home health, assisting individuals with the transition from institutional environment to home and community.

The WVU Division of Occupational Therapy strives to educate professionals empowered to transform lives locally and globally through participation in scholarly activity, research, and service to the community. Ashley's service to the families within the state of WV certainly exemplifies these qualities. Thanks for representing WVU, Ashley! We're proud of your accomplishments!
