West Virginia University, including the WVU Research Corp., will close Friday, June 18, following a Presidential Proclamation and separate declaration issued by Gov. Jim Justice proclaiming a state holiday in recognition of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth, which is held on June 19 each year, celebrates the ending of slavery in the U.S. This year, June 19 falls on a Saturday. As a result, Friday, June 18, will be recognized as a full-day holiday for all public employees of the state.
While classes (undergraduate and graduate) are canceled Friday, some essential campus services — including the Carruth Center (crisis intervention), Child Learning Center, Creative Arts Center, Information Technology Services, WVU buses, summer school housing, Student Health and University Police — will remain open. The WVU Libraries will be closed, although the West Virginia Day events will continue to be held virtually.
Campus Recreation will continue to operate normal summer hours (6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) on Friday. Campus Recreation programs and services, including Youth Summer Camps, also will operate as planned.
All Adventure WV operations, including First Year Trips, will operate as planned.
All Athletics practices and events also will continue as planned.
The Mountainlair will be closed on Friday. Similarly, Dining Services locations across campus will be closed with the exception of Health Sciences venues, which will operate on a normal schedule.
WVU Extension Service offices will be closed across the state due to the holiday. However, Jackson’s Mill will remain open. Some Extension activities, such as 4-H camps, also will continue as scheduled. Please check with the county office.
The closure will be effective for all non-essential personnel beginning at midnight through 11:59 p.m. on Friday. Employees who are considered essential personnel will be contacted by their supervisor with additional information regarding the work schedule tomorrow.
Units with existing emergency closure protocols should follow those. Employees with questions or concerns should contact their supervisor.
The University will reopen on a normal schedule Saturday, June 19 and classes will resume on Monday, June 21.
