Improving the patient, family experience

Looking for a status update on a family member or friend being seen in the Emergency Department, or having a surgical procedure? Want a text alert when it’s time for your appointment? The WVU Medicine app can do all that – and more:

  • Check the real-time status of a family member or friend being seen in the Emergency Department.
  • Check the real-time status of a family member or friend undergoing a surgical procedure.
  • Check your waiting room status and get notified when it’s time to be seen.
  • Provide feedback about your experience.

These features are available at WVU Medicine hospitals system-wide.

“Due to COVID-19 and visitor restrictions, it can be particularly difficult for family members to follow their loved ones during a surgical procedure or ED visit,” said Ilo Romero, vice president and assistant chief information officer. “Our front desk staff was getting overwhelmed with calls from families asking for updates. The WVU Medicine app has helped reduce the number of calls and improve the experience for patients and families. The response to the app has been very positive, and we already have more than 8,000 active users.”

Additional app features at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and WVU Medicine Children’s include:

  • Get wayfinding assistance when traveling to all publicly-accessible areas on levels one through four of the hospital; that includes lobbies and waiting areas, clinical departments, cafeteria, Starbucks, and gift shop.
  • Get wayfinding assistance when traveling to the nurses’ stations on levels five through 10 of the hospital.

Providing employee resources

In addition to providing valuable tools for patients and visitors, the WVU Medicine app gives employees a direct link to CONNECT news through its Employee Portal. All of the same news articles that appear in the CONNECT news feed at each WVU Medicine hospital can be found on the app.
