Pre-Hospital Medicine
The Division of Prehospital Medicine’s focus is on the education, performance, medical direction, quality assurance, and research of patient care in the out-of-hospital environment. Our mission extends over a wide variety of out-of-hospital patient care, including:
- fire departments/first responders
- emergency medical services (EMS) both at the basic and advanced levels (BLS and ALS)
- tactical EMS (working with law enforcement)
- event medicine (providing EMS coverage at mass gatherings)
- basic interhospital transport, critical interhospital ground transport
- helicopter EMS (HEMS)
- specialty transport teams such as neonatal, pediatric, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) teams
In addition to working with those individuals and teams, the division also:
- operates an EMS Physician Response program to assist rural EMS agencies
- contributes to research, policy and protocol development/implementation
- consults on EMS legislation
- functions as a resource to assist the West Virginia EMS Advisory Council (EMSAC) and the State Office of EMS (WVOEMS)
Division Stats
- We perform medical direction for our system’s 10 EMS helicopters that perform over 4,500 transport per year.
- We provide medical direction for EMS agencies that perform over 64,000 transports per year, ranging from BLS to critical care transports.
- Our EMS Medical Command center handles over 70,000 medical command interactions annually.
- Our system faculty, fellows, residents, and advanced practice providers care for over 181,000 patients annually.
