Program Design

Program Overview

The musculoskeletal radiology fellowship is a one-year training program that provides comprehensive exposure to all aspects of MSK radiology. The fellow will spend the majority of the year on dedicated MSK rotations, gaining experience in interpreting a high volume of diagnostic studies including radiographs, CT, and MRI related to bone, joint, and soft tissue pathology. A significant portion of the training involves image-guided procedures, such as joint injections, aspirations, and imaging-guided soft tissue and bone biopsies.

Multidisciplinary Experience

Additionally, the fellow will gain experience in ultrasonography, bone densitometry, and radionuclide scintigraphy, as they relate to diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

The fellow will also prepare and present at regularly scheduled interdisciplinary sports medicine conference.

Educational Curriculum

Our program is structured in accordance with the latest recommendations from the ACGME and Society of Skeletal Radiology (SSR) and emphasizes a balanced mix of diagnostic imaging and procedural experience. The fellow will attend departmental didactic conferences and teaching sessions, as well as regularly scheduled interdepartmental conferences. Additionally, the fellowship participates in the SSR Musculoskeletal Fellowship Consortium, providing the fellow with monthly didactic lectures, quarterly journal clubs, and access to national collaborative educational resources.

Call and Moonlighting

There are no overnight or weekend call responsibilities. Moonlighting opportunities are available, but not required, and must be approved in accordance with institutional policies.

Teaching and Academic Responsibilities

The fellow will play an active role in education by presenting at interdisciplinary conferences and several resident noon conferences throughout the year. The fellow is expected to actively participate in the education of junior residents, such as one-on-one teaching during rotations and leading small group case-based discussions. Additional opportunities are available for the fellow to teach medical students.

Research and Quality Improvement

The fellow is required to complete an academic project and a quality improvement (QI) project during the fellowship year. To support these endeavors, the fellow is allotted a half-day of protected academic time each week. The fellow should attend and participate in local conferences and at least one national meeting or subspecialty course while in training.

Additional Fellowship Benefits

  • Educational fund of $1,500 annually
  • Additional $2,500 stipend to attend a radiology conference or board review course
  • 5 days of conference time per academic year
