Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences welcomes Assistant Professor Binbin Xie

Binbin Xie, OD, PhD, joined the West Virginia University Eye Institute and Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences as an assistant professor in the optometry service on July 1.

Dr. Xie brings several years of experience in ophthalmology and optometry, combining advanced clinical training, research expertise and a passion for patient-centered care. Her clinical interests include ocular disease management, low vision rehabilitation, comprehensive eye care and the collaborative management of patients with complex vision needs.

Xie said she is honored to join the team at the Eye Institute as faculty and work alongside the physicians who served as valuable mentors to her during her training.

“I had the opportunity to complete an externship at the Eye Institute prior to my residency training, and I was so impressed by this supportive team and their passion for teaching and dedication to high-quality patient care,” Xie said. “I am very excited to continue working alongside this outstanding team and serving this welcoming and grateful patient population.”

After completing her externship at the Eye Institute in August 2024, Xie completed additional externships at the Salus University Eye Institute, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Vision Institute and the Wilmington VA Medical Center. Following her externship training, she completed her residency in low vision and ocular disease at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Vision Institute in 2026.

Prior to coming to the United States to complete her training, Xie earned her PhD in Ophthalmology from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University in China in 2013.

She went on to practice as a physician at the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in China, where she performed pre-surgical evaluations and postoperative management for cataract patients and treated a wide range of ocular diseases.

In addition to her clinical work, Xie has served as an educator and researcher, teaching medical and optometry students and contributing to multiple peer-reviewed publications in ophthalmology and ocular drug delivery research.

Xie is a member of the American Optometric Association, the American Academy of Optometry and Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society. She has received several academic honors, including the Lawrence G. Gray Neuro-Ophthalmic Scholarship and the Class of 1950 Scholarship.
