Ease winter blues with 'Mindful Steps to Seasonal Change' workshop

Ease winter blues with 'Mindful Steps to Seasonal Change' workshop

Join this interactive workshop to explore how mindfulness can alleviate the psychological and physiological challenges that often arise during the long winter months, fostering a steadier and more compassionate approach to daily life.

Participants will be introduced to accessible practices that integrate brain science, emotional regulation, and gentle movement. The event will be led by neuroscientist Julie Brefczynski-Lewis, clinical therapist Laurel Faulkenberry, and yoga teacher Heidi Sherwin.

What you’ll experience:

  • Practice grounding techniques to stabilize the nervous system when winter stress or overwhelm arises.
  • Explore brief mindfulness exercises that can be incorporated at your desk, at home, or before bed to support sleep and mood.
  • Experiment with gentle, mindful movement and breathing to bring warmth, circulation, and ease to a tense, chilled body.
  • Reflect on your relationship with winter and reframe the season as a time for intentional rest, inner light, and renewal.
  • Identify a few realistic “mindful steps” you can carry into the remainder of the season to strengthen resilience and self-compassion.

This free workshop will be held on Thursday, Jan. 29, from noon to 1 p.m. on Zoom and is open to all members of the WVU community. Register here.
