Nursing students participate in Spring 2026 Pledge Ceremony, marking their commitment to the profession
WVU School of Nursing students at the Bridgeport and Morgantown campuses recently pledged their commitment to the nursing profession during the Spring 2026 Pledge Ceremony.
The Morgantown ceremony on Feb. 27 welcomed the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) Class of August 2027 and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Class of December 2028. The Bridgeport ceremony on March 5 welcomed the ABSN Class of August 2027.
“To me, the pledge ceremony is an outward expression of my internal commitment to serve and help others to the best of my ability,” said Bryce Cayton, of Buckhannon, a BSN student on the Morgantown Campus.
For Madden Marra, who has been working as a clinical associate, the Pledge Ceremony is a special mile marker.
“I’ve already seen what it takes to care for patients and taking that pledge feels like promising myself and my future patients that I will always give my best,” said Marra, a BSN student at Morgantown. “It makes everything feel more real and more meaningful.”
Students took the WVU Student Nurse Pledge, in which they pledged to uphold the ethical, moral and scholastic standards of the school and the profession. They also pledged themselves to caring and compassionate conduct and to always act in the best interest of their patients.
Both student nurses and current nurses in attendance at the event were invited to recite the International Pledge for Nurses, which is a promise to care for the sick with all the skills and understanding they possess to alleviate suffering and to promote health.
“For me, the Pledge Ceremony represents a lasting commitment to the career of nursing,” said Jack Mitchell, an ABSN student at Bridgeport. “This commitment is something to be taken seriously because going forward we will not only be representing WVU but the entire profession of nursing.”
For Emma Hamilton, also an ABSN student on the Bridgeport Campus, the ceremony is an opportunity to uphold a legacy of ethics and trust.
“Nursing is considered the most ethical profession, and the Pledge Ceremony is our chance to commit to the values and standards of the profession,” Hamilton said.
