A service and research project developed by members of the West Virginia University School of Dentistry has been published in the Journal of Dental Education.

The article, “The Walk, Talk, Chalk Program to Improve Student Health and Wellness,” is co-authored by R. Constance Wiener, DMD, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Dental Public Health and Professional Practice; Bayan Abuhalimeh, DDS, a resident in the periodontics advanced education program; M. Suann Gaydos, MS, professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene and director of the Certified Tobacco Treatment Training Program; Elizabeth Southern Puette, MSDH, assistant professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene; and Valerie Perrine, DDS, executive dean for education and student affairs.

Supported by the school’s Wellness and Well-being Committee, the Walk, Talk, Chalk program aims to promote cancer prevention by educating participants about tobacco cessation and encouraging healthy behaviors while engaging in physical activity.

The Journal of Dental Education is a peer-reviewed monthly journal that publishes a variety of educational and scientific research in dental, allied dental and advanced dental education. Published continuously by the American Dental Education Association since 1936, it is internationally recognized as the premier journal for academic dentistry.
