WVU School of Medicine Eastern Campus Class of 2026 celebrates Match Day

The West Virginia University School of Medicine’s Eastern Campus recently celebrated Match Day, where fourth-year medical students received their letters and learned where they will spend the next several years completing their residency training.

The event was held at the Sycamore at Stonebridge in Martinsburg on Friday, March 20. Graduating fourth-year medical students from the Eastern Campus, their families and members of the Eastern Campus faculty and staff were among those in attendance.

The ten students in the Eastern Campus’s Class of 2026 matched to a variety of residency programs across the country, spanning specialties such as family medicine, internal medicine and psychiatry. Of those ten students, five learned they would be continuing their training at the University, as they matched to several different programs at the WVU School of Medicine, including:

  • Internal Medicine – West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va.
  • Internal Medicine Pediatrics – West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va.
  • Rural Family Medicine – West Virginia University Eastern Campus, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

The rest of the class matched to the following programs across the country:

  • Internal Medicine – Inova Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, VA
  • Internal Medicine – Tulane University, New Orleans, LA
  • Psychiatry – Tripler Army Medical Center, Tripler Air Force Base, Honolulu, Hawaii

  • Psychiatry – Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio

The ceremony began with welcome and introductory remarks from Richard Thomas, MD, DDS, dean and associate vice president for the West Virginia University School of Medicine’s Eastern Campus.

The featured speaker for the event was Chancellor and Executive Dean for WVU Health Sciences, Clay Marsh, MD, who shared his excitement for celebrating the day alongside the Eastern Campus students.

“Match Day is a monumental day for all fourth-year medical students across our three campuses, and I am delighted to have been able to celebrate this milestone alongside our Eastern Campus students and their families in Martinsburg this year,” Dr. Marsh said. “I look forward to seeing all the great things they will accomplish as they embark on the next phase of their medical education journeys.”

Following Dr. Marsh’s remarks, Assistant Dean for Student Services Adrienne Zavala, MD, distributed the match envelopes to the eagerly awaiting students.

“Being able to hand students their match envelopes and see the excitement and joy on their faces as they open their letters and achieve their goal of becoming a medical resident is always one of the major highlights of my year,” Dr. Zavala said. “I am incredibly proud of each of our students, and will miss having the opportunity to work so closely with them.”
