WVU School of Pharmacy and student pharmacists celebrate American Pharmacists Month

October is American Pharmacists Month, a time to recognize the incredible impact pharmacists have on our health and well-being. According to the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), 90% of Americans live within five miles of a pharmacy. That accessibility makes pharmacists some of the most trusted and relied-upon health care professionals.

In addition to dispensing medications and ensuring their safe and effective use, pharmacists provide immunizations, manage medications, offer point-of-care testing, and so much more. In short, they make a lasting impact on our communities every day.

To celebrate and raise awareness of the profession, the WVU School of Pharmacy and its student organizations have planned a month full of activities aimed at sharing valuable health information and advocating for the profession. Below are the events for the remainder of the month.

· October 8 (3 p.m.): Members of APhA-ASP will administer the influenza vaccine to the current WVU Mountaineer Mascot, Caid Kincaid.

· October 13 (Noon – 1 p.m.): Women in Pharmacy Day. APhA-ASP students will partner with Lambda Kappa Sigma to hand out cookies in the Pharmacy Student Lounge.

· October 16 (Noon – 1 p.m.): National Pharmacy Technician Day. Student pharmacists will gather in Room 1905 to assemble goodie bags for pharmacy techs around Morgantown. Student volunteers will receive 1 community service hour.

· October 16 (Noon to 12:50 p.m.) APhA-ASP and the WVU Pediatric Pharmacy Association are co-hosting a Pediatric Pharmacists Panel in room 3007. Pharmacists from WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital will speak about various roles as well as unique challenges and opportunities they face in their profession.

· October 23 (5:30 – 8:30 p.m.): OktoberPhest Mixer at The Co-Op Downtown (123 Pleasant Street). All SoP faculty, staff, students, and their guests are invited.

· October 24 (Noon – 1 p.m.): Dean’s Hour Panel, “Pharmacy Pathways: Leadership Across the Profession,” in Okey Patteson Auditorium. Speakers include School of Pharmacy alums LeeAnn Miller and Bruce Roberts, as well as Albert Wright, president and CEO of the West Virginia University Health System.

2025 marks the 21st Anniversary of American Pharmacists Month. This year’s theme, Caring for Our Communities, highlights the incredible dedication of over 700,000 pharmacy professionals and student pharmacists across the country.
