PBS NewsHour explores WVU Medicine's novel approach to fighting Alzheimer's

Judi and Mark Polak

PBS NewsHour has posted a news story about the groundbreaking research that the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute is doing to develop new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.

WVU was selected as the first site in the world for an innovative clinical trial to treat Alzheimer’s. Ali Rezai, MD, director of the Institute, leads the initiative in collaboration with INSIGHTEC, a medical technology company that is funding the clinical trial. INSIGHTEC received approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin the clinical trial using focused ultrasound to treat Alzheimer’s.

This new Phase II trial at WVU will use INSIGHTEC’s Exablate Neuro system to further evaluate the safety and benefits of focused ultrasound treatment to disrupt the blood-brain barrier in the regions of the brain affected by Alzheimer’s.

The video, “Can ultrasound be used to fight Alzheimer’s?,” describes Judi Polak’s experience with Alzheimer’s disease and how the clinical trial has given her hope.
