WVU Medicine offering new minimally invasive option for gynecologic surgery

WVU Medicine is offering a less invasive surgical option for hysterectomy. Vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) utilizes the vagina as a surgical route as an alternative to traditional laparoscopic approaches.

vNOTES Hysterectomy ProcedureThis new surgical approach leaves no visible scars and reduces postoperative pain, recovery time, and hospital stays.

“The changes in technology for hysterectomy and other gynecologic surgeries have greatly improved in recent years,” Omar Duenas, MD, WVU Medicine obstetrician and gynecologist, said. “This technology allows us to reach the uterus and ovaries through the vagina, eliminating scarring and making recovery much easier for our patients.”

Vaginal hysterectomy has been recommended whenever feasible by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
