WVU offers free speech, language and reading camps this summer for area youths

The Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders within the West Virginia University School of Medicine will be offering three separate summer camps to help school-aged children with speech, language and reading.

All camps will take place Monday, June 19 through Friday, July 28 and are offered free of charge for those in need of speech sound treatment by Rite Care. Camps take place at WVU’s Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic at the Applied Human Sciences building on the Evansdale Campus in Morgantown.

These sessions will be under the supervision of School of Medicine Communication Sciences and Disorders faculty with training and expertise in the specific areas. Teletherapy options are also available.

Speech group therapy camp

Children with speech and articulation disorders benefit from intensive treatment and this camp will allow them to improve their speech production. Participants will be placed in small groups of three with similar speech patterns for learning and instruction.

All sessions will take place Monday through Thursday, with two separate groups available. The first is 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., the second is 11 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. on those days.

Reading group therapy camp

Children with reading disorders or learning disabilities will refine and develop their reading skills, including phonemic awareness, sounding out words and reading comprehension during this camp. Participants will work in small groups of three to address the reading skills they need.

There are two groups for this camp, one on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and one on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on those days.

Language skills group therapy camp

Children with learning disabilities, language disorders, reading disorders and reading comprehension difficulties can participate in groups of three to improve academic performance in oral language, reading comprehension and writing.
