Curriculum and Rotations
Rotations
MICU:
- Two ICU teams
- Alternating days taking admission call, discussing patient care with ED, medicine patients, and transfer (MARS) calls for outside admissions
- One fellow leaves at 5 PM with the other fellow covering late call until 7 PM.
- One Friday night call per week split among all the fellows.
- Weekend coverage for MICU, every six weeks on average.
Night Float (NF)/Pulmonary Ambulatory Clinic Services (PACS):
- Two weeks per one month rotation; total of four weeks per year
- Nights: In-house night coverage from 7 PM to 7 AM. Nights are six nights on/one off.
- PACS: Three half days of personal clinic with additional half days in sub-specialty clinics including thoracic oncology, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, advanced COPD, and sleep clinic.
Veteran's Affairs (VA):
- One month rotation completed once per year.
- Completed at local VA hospital in Clarksburg, WV. Mix of inpatient pulmonary consults, ICU management, procedures, pulmonary clinic, and sleep clinic.
Pulmonary Consults:
- One month rotation completed twice per year
- One senior and one junior fellow on service
- Wide breadth of consults and procedure exposure while on service
Electives:
- Required electives include Thoracic Surgery, SICU, Neurology ICU, Cardiovascular ICU, Sleep, and Research.
- Additional electives to select from include Lung Transplant (away rotation at the Cleveland Clinic), ED ultrasound, Anesthesia, Radiology, Cardiology Blue (heart failure service), and Long-Term Acute Care Facility (LTACH).
We also have a robust procedural service with the bronchoscopy suite that has dedicated respiratory therapist and nurse with anesthesia coverage. Fellows participate in many procedures including intubation, bronchoscopy, chest tubes, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), and navigational bronchoscopy.
Fellows participate in rotations in MICU, Night Float, Pulmonary Consults, Veteran Affairs Hospital, Pulmonary Ambulatory Consult Service, and various electives. The rotation schedule may vary and is subject to change. An example of the 2021-2022 fellow rotation schedule is below:
