Health Informatics and Information Management

This degree is the "business" of healthcare -- where science and information technology meet to create a unique degree with diverse opportunities for graduates.

The first, and only, bachelor of science program in West Virginia offered in this field includes training in: 

  • Compliance and risk management
  • Healthcare privacy and security
  • Health informatics and data analysis
  • Clinical documentation improvement
  • Information governance
  • Operations and medical records administration
  • Revenue cycle management

The program also offers hands-on learning with advanced healthcare applications, master patient indexes and electronic health records.

Beginning with the summer before your sophomore year of high school, eligible students can begin taking courses toward completing the Health Informatics and Information Management degree.

Students will an overall high school grade point average of 3.0 are eligible for the WVU high school ACCESS program. This wonderful opportunity offers 26 credits hours of required courses needed to complete the HIIM degree.

Whether or not you are able to complete all or some of the courses, you will be closer to graduating early and getting a jump start on joining the workforce. Some students may be able to complete one year of required courses and graduate in three years!

Career opportunities exist to work in healthcare systems, hospitals, private practice offices, clinics, skilled and long-term care and healthcare software companies.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics cites medical and health services manager positions are projected to grow faster than the national average.

Starting out, graduates can expect average salaried in the $30,000 to 50,000 range. Experienced professionals can earn upwards of $50,000 to 75,000 annually.

At the School of Medicine's Health Informatics and Information Management program, students experience advance healthcare applications currently in use by learning on the internet-based, V-Lab developed by the American Health Information Management Association. Students also gain valuable experience during three professional practice experiences.

The program's graduates are work-ready within the health information field and go on to work in a variety of settings and roles.

Students gain 400+ hours of practical experience over the four-year program.
