Immunology and Medical Microbiology

Curriculum

Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on research experience, our curriculum prepares students for immediate employment or further study.

Well-qualified immunology and medical microbiology students can pursue opportunities to complete research-intensive internships under the supervision of a faculty member in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology. Students selected for these internships enter a research laboratory following their sophomore year and continue in the same laboratory throughout their junior and senior years. These internships provide financial support and provide invaluable experience that enhances participants' opportunities for success in graduate or professional school or for careers in industry, government, and more.

Program Requirements

Students completing the Bachelor of Science (BS) in immunology and medical microbiology must complete the General Education Foundations (GEF), prerequisite, and major requirements as outlined in the West Virginia University Academic Catalog. Each student will have a personalized plan of study located in DegreeWorks, including any previously-completed college coursework that is approved as transfer credit.

To be eligible for graduation, students must:

  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or greater in all coursework attempted.
    • Students who do not maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or greater will be placed on probation for one semester. Students on probation who do not raise their cumulative GPA to 2.75 or greater after one semester will be dismissed from the program.
  • Pass all required courses for the major with a grade of C or better.
    • A student who receives a grade of D, F, U, or W in a required Immunology and Medical Microbiology program core course may repeat that course once and must earn a grade of C or better. A student may repeat only one core course. Students who repeat an Immunology and Medical Microbiology Program core course and earn a grade of D, F, U, or W will be dismissed from the program.
  • The BS in Immunology and Medical Microbiology requires a minimum of 45 hours to a maximum of 49 hours in Immunology and Medical Microbiology required courses. A minimum of 128 total hours is required for graduation, however, in some instances the total number of earned credit hours may exceed this total depending on the electives chosen.
