Course List
Biochemistry 339
Introduction to Biochemistry (Fall)
BIOC 339 is a 4 credit, introductory course suitable as a first biochemistry course for undergraduates and graduate students. It is strongly biased towards the study of the biochemistry of higher animals and is especially suited to students intending to progress further in the Health Sciences. Material covered in this course includes structures, properties and functions of biomolecules, including sugars, fats, amino acids, nucleotides, proteins, biomembranes and nucleic acids. Topics also include enzyme kinetics and mechanisms, metabolic pathways, and mechanisms regulating metabolism and gene expression. It consists of four 50 min lectures per week, with 4 midterm exams, a make up exam and a comprehensive final. Students must have taken Organic Chemistry and Biology to enroll for this course.

Biochemistry 339-S
Introduction to Biochemistry (Summer), Online
BIOC 339-S in the summer semester is a 4 credit, introductory biochemistry course suitable as a first biochemistry course for undergraduate students. It is strongly biased towards the biochemistry of higher animals and is especially suitable for students intending to progress further in the Health Sciences (Medical, Dental, Pharmacy and related students). The summer course consists of 48 power point lectures, distributed as 6 lectures per week over 2 months. The power point presentations are supplemented with instructor notes, interactive homework problems and review questions. Four exams will be administered during the first 8 weeks, and a comprehensive final exam will be administered in the 9th week. For WVU Exercise Physiology students, and possibly other students, to receive credit for this course, they must take the same exams must be taken on site. Students must have successfully completed Organic Chemistry and Biology to enroll in this course – to receive a waiver from these prerequisites, permission must be obtained from the course coordinator, Michael Gunther, Ph.D.

Biochemistry 531
General Biochemistry - Pharmacy (Spring)
This course, taught in conjunction with General Dental Biochemistry (BIOC 705), is designed to be a general introduction to biochemical compounds, processes, and concepts for students in the pharmacy health professional program (BIOC 531), as well as undergraduates who have had general and organic chemistry and are interested in a medically-oriented, general biochemistry course (BIOC 493). Specific topics such as the biochemistry of various diseased states, enzyme mechanisms, therapeutic use of enzyme inhibitors, effects of drugs on various metabolic pathways, signal transduction, drug biotransformation and drug resistance provide basic biochemical information for subsequent pharmacy courses in the training of students for the practice of pharmacy, including passage of the Pharmacy Board exam. The course consists of four lectures or clinical correlations per week for 4 credit hours.
