There are differences for academic Family Physicians versus Family Physicians in private or group practices. As an academic Family Physician I feel I have more variety and opportunity to continue full spectrum family practice. Typical private or solo practices have a primarily clinics during the day with some evening home phone call unless they have a hospital or nursing home practice. An academic family medicine physician has the opportunity to continue an outpatient practice as well as rotate through the hospital service and obstetrical services while educating upcoming family physicians.
The increased pressures of providing quality health care with increasing time limitations. Providing all aspects of family medicine care including maternity care with increasing health care demands and malpractice issues.
Stronger primary care influence to improve the health care system and to better serve the community and meet the health care needs in a changing environment.
I would recommend the student look at training in a program that will provide the resident the opportunity to prepare for practice in an area where they would plan to practice after residency.
