African-American students or any student who is having problems adjusting to medical school, having academic difficulties, etc.

What does a typical day in the life of an academic urologist include?

The typical day usually includes seeing patients in the clinic or spending time in the procedure or operating room. It may also involve teaching residents or medical students or spending time in residency conferences, staff or committee meetings.

What is the biggest challenge of being a urologist?

The biggest challenge of being a urologist is time management and being prepared for various duties at the medical school or hospital.

How do you foresee urology changing over the next 20 years?

I foresee the field of urology to continue emphasizing outpatient surgery and minimally invasive robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery of renal, bladder and prostate cancer.

What advice would you give a student who is considering a urology residency?

I would recommend that students maximize their medical school experience to the fullest. Learn and retain as much as possible from all areas of study. I also recommend that they rotate on the urology service to experience the specialty “up close and personal”.
