Is there a particular population of students (e.g., ethnicity, spiritual, sexual orientation) that you would particularly like to advise?
I am open to advise any students.
What does a typical day in the life of Dr. Rowan include?
The life of an Ob-Gyn is exciting because every day is different. Over the course of a week, I will spend the majority of my time in the clinic seeing infertility patients. However, I also see a variety of patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric. Surgery days will range from outpatient laparoscopy to robotic procedures and open abdominal surgery.
What is the biggest challenge of being an Ob?
The work schedule. With infertility medicine, women don't always ovulate Monday through Friday and with Obstetrics women don't deliver during office hours. If you are in a group, you split the nights and weekends and the schedule is very manageable.
How do you foresee Ob-Gyn changing over the next 20 years?
Ob-Gyn is a broad field and I think providers will become more specialized with the field.
What advice would you give a student who is considering a Ob-Gyn residency?
Spend some time in clinic and in the operating room with an Ob-Gyn. I feel this experience would be invaluable in choosing your career.
