Special Clinical/Research Interests: Clinically I take care of patients who have been diagnosed with obesity. For research, I am interested in improving the health and wellbeing of rural populations. The methods that I commonly used are mixed-methods research in implementation science.

Is there a particular population of students (e.g., ethnicity, spiritual, sexual orientation) that you would particularly like to advise?

No specific population.

What does a typical day in the life of a Family Medicine clinician scientist include?

I have a healthy balance of service through seeing patients in obesity medicine clinics, teaching students, and conducting research.

What is the biggest challenge of being a Family Medicine clinician scientist?

Keeping a healthy balance of three important areas of the job. I have to keep a close eye that I am protecting time for service, teaching, and research.

How do you foresee Family Medicine clinician scientist changing over the next 20 years?

The field is growing. Research was commonly done in very controlled environments however clinical populations are not controlled environments. Pragmatic research will increase allowing a closer link between patient care and research as we progress in evidence based clinical care.
What advice would you give a student who is considering a Family Medicine residency?

Watch your interests closely. If you find that you have an interest in multiple areas of medicine as you complete your clerkships, you should really think about looking at Family Medicine as a career choice.
