About Us
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the WVU Department of Physiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology is to create an inclusive environment of excellence in the Health Sciences Center which provides academic leadership in professional teaching and basic science research. Our goal is to produce the next generation of scientists and health care professionals.
Our educational activities serve diverse student populations including: undergraduate, graduate, medical, professional, postdoctoral fellows and faculty scholars. The purpose of these efforts is to continually enlighten health care professionals and the public on the disciplines of physiology, pharmacology, and toxicology.
Our interdisciplinary basic science research programs are focused on critical issues associated with physiology, pharmacology, and toxicology. The purpose of these efforts is the identification and evaluation of biomedical mechanisms of health and disease that ultimately improve human health.
As one Department, in all these endeavors, our common core value is to serve West Virginia and improve the health of West Virginians. Mountaineers Go First!
Research Facilities
In addition to many recently renovated laboratories that contained specialized equipment for individual researchers, the WVU Physiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology Department has common facilities available for general use including
- an isotope suite with liquid scintillation and gamma counters
- histology area and confocal microscope
- high pressure liquid chromatograph
- high speed centrifuges
- machine shop
Institutional facilities and equipment shared with other departments include
- a mass spectrophotometer
- gas chromatograph
- electron microscopes
- image analysis system
- recombinant DNA core facility
- monoclonal antibody facility
- cell sorting and sizing equipment
Excellent animal-holding rooms and animal sterile surgery suites are located within the building.
The Health Sciences Library, also located within the building, receives over 2,000 journals and has facilities for Medline Computer Search, programmed learning, and inter-library loan services.
