Course Description

This is a 7-credit, online course designed as a summer make-up course for first-year medical students. This course is designed for students who need to remediate the physiology portion of the WVU School of Medicine CCMD 730: Human Function (or outside institution equivalent) course. Students will attend a virtual classroom by viewing online lectures, available at any time, and may interact with faculty and classmates through pre-arranged online discussion forum and chat room.   
 
This course integrates the basic knowledge (molecular, sub-cellular, cellular, and tissue components) of body organ system function, and whole body functions. This course further applies basic science to the understanding of human health and disease. The overall goal of this course is to expose the students to basic science information and allow them to develop the skills needed to solve therapeutic problems concerning the practice of medicine.  
 
Students taking this course can expect to spend, on average, 5 hours per day during the week viewing recorded lectures. Thorough note-taking and review of textbook materials is also highly recommended. Lectures can be viewed in a self-paced format via streaming video; course materials are also available in PowerPoint, mp3, and text formats. Instructors answer students' questions via an online discussion forum. Weekly exams are given online, and the final exam (NBME Subject Exam in Physiology, a.k.a., "the shelf board") is given on-site in Morgantown, WV. Positive identification is required for admission to the final exam. Students must earn a passing grade on the shelf board (12th percentile or higher) and must have a passing average (75.0% or higher) on the weekly online exams in order to pass the course.

Qualifications and Prerequisites

Status as a first-year medical student having taken WVU SOM CCMD 730 or outside institutional equivalent or instructor permission.
