Bachelor of Science (BS)

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in biomedical laboratory diagnostics (BLD) - medical laboratory science track offers strong preparation for immediate employment or postgraduate studies. As part of the curriculum, students receive extensive practical experience working in laboratories of affiliated clinical sites, including WVU Medicine locations.

The first two years of study consist of a pre-professional curriculum where students complete prerequisite coursework, while the last two years consist of the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics professional curriculum. The pre-professional curriculum can be completed at the WVU main campus, one of the WVU regional campuses, or any regionally accredited college or university.

The second two years are more hands-on, based at the WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center and including opportunities for extensive practical experience in laboratories of affiliated clinical sites, including WVU Medicine locations.

While granting of the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree is not contingent on passing any external certification or licensure examination, the BLD program also prepares graduates to sit for the national certification examination given by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC).
