Action Required: OKTA desktop password sync for MacOS

Ahead of Apple’s next major software update expected this fall, WVU is rolling out Okta Desktop Password Sync for university-managed Macs. This will keep the password you use to log in to your Mac the same as your WVU password, meaning your WVU password will work at the Mac login screen, when you unlock your screen, and when your Mac starts up (FileVault).

We are implementing this change in phases to ensure we work through any issues or errors before rolling this out university wide. We are asking our ITS-supported units to help us troubleshoot any issues first.

Beginning Wednesday, August 26, you can sync your passwords.

You will see a notification in the top right of your screen asking to register your Mac. Click on it and you will be guided through the registration process.

What this means for users

When you change your WVU password, your Mac picks up the change automatically, usually within a minute.

The biggest improvement: you no longer need to be on the WVU network or VPN. Your password will sync over any internet connection, whether you are at home, traveling, or at a conference.

What is going away

Okta Desktop Password Sync replaces NoMAD, the tool WVU has used until now.

Does my Mac qualify?

Your Mac is eligible if it runs macOS 26 or newer, uses an Apple chip (M-series or A-series), and is managed by WVU through Jamf Pro. If you are not sure, contact ITS.

If your Mac does not qualify yet, you do not need to do anything. You will stay on NoMAD until your Mac is upgraded or replaced.

Shared and lab Macs are not part of this rollout. A separate solution for those machines is in progress.
