Campbell honored by Society of Academic Urologists for advancing education

The Society of Academic Urologists, the premier organization for urological clinician educators, has honored Steven Campbell, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the West Virginia University School of Medicine Department of Urology, their inaugural Faculty Educator Award.

The awards committee noted that Dr. Campbell has built a distinguished career in advancing urologic education that has had a profound effect on residents and colleagues.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by fellow educators and national leaders in academic urology. Giving the future generation of urologists the tools, competency and support they need is always a worthwhile pursuit that I’m lucky to get contribute to daily,” Campbell explained.

Campbell will accept the award and deliver a talk to his peers in attendance about teaching and mentorship later this year at the Society’s annual meeting that takes place in Houston, Texas Feb. 6-7, 2026.

“One of the main reasons I came to WVU was the overall cohesive and hard-working team that ensured the residents here had a fantastic opportunity for their education and growth as physicians,” Campbell said. “Our program directors, faculty and staff have all been great and have not only met, but exceeded, my expectations.”

Campbell joined WVU from The Cleveland Clinic, where he is a board-certified urologist who served as vice chair of urology, residency program director and professor of surgery. There he led the largest urology residency training program in the United States, and was central to the urologic oncology fellowship program.

Clay Marsh, M.D., chancellor and executive dean for Health Sciences, echoed the Society’s praise for Campbell.

“I can’t think of someone who is more deserving of this award. Dr. Campbell’s reputation proceeded his arrival, and his leadership has not only enhanced the level of care we’re able to offer patients, but is also an incredible base of knowledge and passion for clinical teaching for our trainees to draw from,” Dr. Marsh said.

In addition to resident education, Campbell’s primary interests include renal cell carcinoma, bladder cancer and prostate cancer. He’s a nationally renowned expert in the field, authoring more than 400 papers and serving as the lead author of the American Urological Association’s Guidelines for the management of kidney cancer as well as several textbooks.
