Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences welcomes new retina specialist Kumar Sambhav
Kumar Sambhav, M.D., joins the West Virginia University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences as an assistant professor.
Dr. Sambhav specializes in treating retinal diseases and brings a wealth of experience in clinical and surgical retina care, as well as a strong focus on clinical retina research. He has received numerous accolades in his field, including awards from the prestigious American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
Sambhav said he looks forward to collaborating with the multidisciplinary team at the WVU Eye Institute as they work together to address visual health in West Virginia and beyond.
“I am thrilled to work alongside such a dedicated group of ophthalmologists who provide crucial ocular services to patients throughout West Virginia and the neighboring states of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland,” he said.
Inspired by his father, an ophthalmologist in their rural hometown in India, Sambhav chose to pursue a similar career path.
“Seeing my father's positive impact on his patients ignited my passion for ophthalmology. I am eager to continue his legacy by enhancing visual health in West Virginia and its surrounding regions as part of the WVU Eye Institute and WVU Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences,” he added.
Sambhav recently completed a Surgical Retina Fellowship at the Dean McGee Eye Institute, Oklahoma University, in 2024. He also completed an Ophthalmology Residency and Internship at the University of Florida and a Clinical Medical Retina Fellowship at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Before moving to the United States, Sambhav completed a Surgical Retina Fellowship at the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad and an Ophthalmology Residency at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh. He earned his medical degree from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal and practiced as a vitreoretinal and cataract specialist in India.
In his spare time, Sambhav enjoys hiking, traveling and spending quality time with his daughter.
