Dr. Dhaval Chauhan to join WVU Medicine Children’s Heart Center

Dhaval Chauhan, MD, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, will join the team at WVU Medicine Children’s Heart Center and the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute on Jan. 30. He will also serve as an assistant professor in the WVU School of Medicine Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Chauhan join the WVU Medicine Children’s Heart Center,” Christopher Mascio, MD, division chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, said. “He has received excellent training, and his focus on congenital heart surgery and clinical research will improve care for the children of West Virginia and beyond.”

Dr. Chauhan received his medical degree from Smt. NHL Municipal College in Gujarat, India. He then completed residency training in general surgery at Rutgers University New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. He completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York; a clinical instructorship in congenital cardiac surgery at Emory University Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta; and a pediatric cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Children’s Mercy Hospital – affiliated with the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri.

The WVU Medicine Children’s Heart Center brings together specialists who can provide answers and solutions to ease parents’ fears and create positive outcomes for their children. The Center was created in June 2021, following the arrival of Dr. Mascio and Jai Udassi, MD, chief of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care. It offers the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic options for congenital heart disease, which begins while the mother is still pregnant.

The Heart Center team shares a centralized space within WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital in to promote collaboration and consultation. This space includes a dedicated Cardiac Intensive Care Unit with focused physicians, advanced practice providers, and nurses, who are trained to handle cardiac patients.

“We are absolutely delighted to have Dr. Chauhan join us as our second pediatric cardiac surgeon,” Dr. Udassi said. “I am so very happy to see our Heart Center grow and provide excellent care to children of West Virginia.”

Chauhan is board certified in general surgery and adult cardiothoracic surgery, and he is board eligible for pediatric cardiac surgery. His clinical interests include the whole spectrum of pediatric cardiac surgery, including single ventricle congenital heart disease, pediatric ventricular assist devices and heart transplant, and adult-congenital heart disease. His research interests include clinical outcomes research in pediatric and adult cardiac surgery, ventricular assist devices, and heart transplant.
