Duenas-Garcia publishes first textbook on new gynecologic surgical procedure

Omar Duenas-Garcia, M.D., an associate professor and vice chair of research in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences recently published the surgical textbook “Atlas of Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (vNOTES).”

According to Dr. Duenas-Garcia, this is the first comprehensive textbook on the vNOTES procedure ever published.

“When I began practicing vNOTES, I quickly realized that there were very few educational resources available,” Duenas-Garcia said. “Most knowledge was exchanged informally through video sharing and collaborative discussions among a small group of surgeons worldwide. As I started training colleagues and residents, it became clear that there was a need for a structured, evidence-based resource outlining the foundational principles, techniques and clinical applications.”

vNOTES offers several patient-centered benefits, including the absence of visible scars, the potential for less postoperative pain and the ability to manage cases involving larger uteri via a minimally invasive route. It also expands surgical options for patients who may not be candidates for traditional laparoscopic or robotic surgery.

“Beyond improving patient outcomes, vNOTES enhances surgical ergonomics and visualization, and contributes to the evolution of gynecologic surgery. This book aims to serve as both an educational tool and a catalyst for further innovation and adoption of the technique,” Duenas-Garcia concluded.

The development of the book spanned approximately two years, from the initial concept through completion, and a copy of the book will be donated to the WVU Health Sciences Library.
