Community Service Hours – As part of your graduation requirement, you must complete 100 hours of community service. Please remember to document what you have already completed, and plan to start early on completing any additional hours needed, since opportunities are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Sharps injury reminder for students – Should you experience an actual, possible, or “just not sure” blood or body fluid exposure, report it immediately to OR staff in the room, go to OR Charge Nurse for assistance. You will report to the ER for immediate follow-up. Must address within 2 hrs! When registering, do not give insurance card, register as “WVU Student Health Guarantor Account” so it does not get charged to your insurance. Be sure to notify one of the campus Deans or Student Services Staff. The full needlestick policy is in the WVU MD Degree Handbook on SOLE.

Peds Grand Rounds is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC. Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC. If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

Wellness Center Virtual Classes – The Wellness Center at BMC is offering a variety of virtual Web-Ex fitness classes free of charge for members, WVU Medicine East staff, and providers. OB/GYN Journal Club – Mon., April 19th, 7:30-8:30am, via virtual connection (link from Ashley Ward at BMC). Topic: “Intrauterine Vacuum-Induced Hemorrhage-Control Device for Rapid Treatment of Postpartum Hemorrhage” presented by Dr. Lori Tucker (WVU Medicine OBGYN), OMS-III Gage Hurlburt and OMS-III Dakota Clouser.

Community Mini-Med School – Tues., April 20th, 7:00pm, via online lecture at WVU Medicine East Facebook page. Topic: “Beating COVID Burnout: Thriving Using The Four Pillars of Wellness” presented by Dr. Rosemarie Lorenzetti and Dr. Madison Humerick (Family Medicine – WVU Eastern Campus), MSIV Kara Bird, and MSIV Jasmin Tharakan.

 *UPDATE* Fri., April 30th, 5:00-7:00pm, in person at Eastern HSC. Posters will be displayed throughout the building and students will present to faculty judges, observing appropriate social distancing. Students should plan to hang their posters by 12:00pm on April 30th and be prepared to discuss with judges 5:00-7:00pm. Winners will be announced on Thursday afternoon, May 6th, via Zoom and will be expected to give a brief presentation of their posters to their fellow students, residents, and some faculty.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm. New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg. To volunteer or for additional information: Cosby Potter-Davis – cosby.davis@comcast.net

Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room. Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity. May Graduation – Live Commencement will be held Sunday, May 16th, at 2:00pm in Milan Puskar Stadium, WVU-Morgantown. You MUST register to participate in the ceremony: https://graduation.wvu.edu/may-commencement. Graduation Application is now open! Go to STAR to apply. Check your DegreeWorks to ensure you’re on track for May graduation. Remember you need 100 hours of Community Service logged on SOLE!

  1. 2 Info - Students who are interested in registering for 2 may do so at any time. You will be verified by the school once you apply for a testing ticket and date. If interested in scheduling your 2 exam, please apply as soon as possible.

V-Scans – Eastern Campus has been loaned 8 ultrasound V-Scan portable machines for student use during your rotations – 2 scanners each for Family Med, Internal Med, Pediatrics, and Surgery. The units are available for checkout in the Student Services office. Please contact Christa (christa.schwoerer.m@wvumedicine.org) or Michelle (alderm@wvumedicine.org) to sign out a unit for use on rotation.

Case Logs – Be sure that your procedure logs in E-value are updated and that all your cases have been logged to date. Remember…case log completion is a requirement for passing your third-year clerkships.
