Sharps injury reminder for students – Should you experience an actual, possible, or “just not sure” blood or body fluid exposure, report it immediately to OR staff in the room, go to OR Charge Nurse for assistance. You will report to the ER for immediate follow-up. Must address within 2 hrs! When registering, DO NOT GIVE INSURANCE CARD, register as “WVU Student Health Guarantor Account” so it does not get charged to your insurance. Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Community Service Hours – As part of your graduation requirement, you must complete 100 hours of community service. Please remember to document what you have already completed, and plan to start early on completing any additional hours needed, since opportunities are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm. New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg.

Relay for Life of Berkeley County - Saturday, June 4, 2022 @ Martinsburg High School

Important Dates:

Mini-Med School – Tuesday, January 25. Online Lecture at 7p on WVU Medicine Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers Facebook page. “Kids & Covid” Join Dr. Rebecca Furby, Board Certified Pediatrician WVU Medicine Primary Care & Pediatrics Spring Mills, as she discusses ways to keep children protected, particularly the youngest who are not yet eligible for vaccination.

  1. Development and Research Weekend – Friday, April 1st and Saturday April 2nd, 2022. All WVU medical students, residents and faculty (not just Eastern Campus) are invited to submit their scholarly work to our annual Research and Development Weekend Poster Contest. All abstracts will be peer- reviewed and not all are accepted for presentation. Items of interest may include: 1. Case report studies (unusual presentations of common diagnoses or usual presentation of uncommon diagnoses) which have a learning component for others 2. Original research in the community arena of medical issues a. new educational formats and outcomes b. new ways of doing a techniques/procedures or outcomes of community involvement and education c. clinical practice innovations and outcomes 3. Quality improvement projects (e.g. chart reviews done to discover areas of possible improvement in clinical practice - a. uncover the percentage of heart failure patents are on ACE’s inhibitors in a practice, and if less than standard of care- what can be done to improve care b. the percentage of new mom’s breast feeding and what can be done to improve that number c. post-op complications due to catheter infections – what can be done to reduce that number Abstracts will be due by February 1st, 2022 If you are doing a project, the bulk of the research should be done by then to allow for a description of the outcomes in your abstract. There are cash awards for the top place winners, beginning with $500 for first place, and top winners are invited to explain their posters to the attendees as part of the Saturday conference Be thinking now of what you may want to put on your poster- and more than one person may be on the poster (several students; faculty and student; resident and student etc.) it may depend on number of charts reviewed or data analyzed. Our research assistants – Carla Toolan carla.toolan@wvumedicine.org and Nathan Fiore nathan.fiore@wvumedicine.org - are also available by appointment to help you. Dr. Eggleston met with the class to explore their initial ideas in August- so contact the Eastern campus Student Services Deans if you have an idea and they will help refer you to an interested member who may share your passion. Specifics on how to submit your abstract etc. will be provided as we get closer to the spring date.

V-Scans – Eastern Campus has been loaned 8 ultrasound V-Scan portable machines for student use during your rotations – 2 scanners each for Family Med, Internal Med, Pediatrics, and Surgery. The units are available for checkout in the Student Services office. Please contact Michelle (alderm@wvumedicine.org) or Annette Jamison annette.jamison@wvumedicine.org to sign out a unit for use on rotation.

Graduation – Commencement ceremony scheduled to be held in person Friday, May 13th, 7:00pm, at the Creative Arts Center in Morgantown. Arrival time: 6:15pm.   • Check your Degree Works Log on to your Degree Works page. You want to ensure that you will be meeting all Graduation requirements. This includes all courses and the 100 hours of Community Service. Please double check your own transcripts this week!

  • Apply for Graduation beginning January 18, you must APPLY for graduation with the University. You will find the instructions to apply via STAR through the registrar’s website. Be prepared to provide a mailing address for your diploma when completing the form. These forms come to me for approval and you will receive an automated email once I have approved your graduation application. I will send an email to remind you when the application opens.

  • Watch Email for More Details We will send more details, hooding information, regalia ordering, etc as we can firm up plans. This also includes Campus Match ceremonies, so please be mindful of checking your emails regularly.
