The WVU Department of Family Medicine is pleased to announce that the applications for its innovative Rural Scholars Program are now available. This program is designed for students committed to making rural/small town Family Medicine in West Virginia a career. Qualified MS III’s are eligible for a $10,000 stipend for their fourth year and facilitated admission to WVU’s Morgantown Family Medicine Residency. The Rural Scholars Program allows for an enhanced primary care experience in the 4th year curriculum as well as early integration into the residency experience. Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, Jan. 8-Dec. 30, 5:00-7:00pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room. Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness. Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm. New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg. To volunteer or for additional information: Cosby Potter-Davis – cosby.davis@comcast.net

Volunteers for HSTA – The local HSTA (Health Sciences & Technology Academy) clubs are looking for speakers to present at meetings in November. Presentations can be science or healthcare related. Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town. 3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am. Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Help needed with setup, tear-down, cooking process, and interacting with patrons. For additional information, contact: Dr. Audreanna James (audreanna.james@wvumedicine.org). Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room. Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity. Community Service – Remember to check your logged community service hours to be sure you have completed the 100-hour requirement for graduation. If you still need community service hours, contact Eastern Student Services for volunteer opportunities.

Financial Aid Seminar – Wed., Mar. 11th, 9-11:30am, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room. Lunch will be provided. 30-minute individual counseling sessions with financial advisor available for the afternoon. MATCH Day – Fri., March 20th, at Purple Iris-Martinsburg. Guests may begin arrival at 11:30am. Official festivities begin with opening of envelopes and lunch at 12pm. As a reminder, be sure that you are registered for both the NRMP and ERAS. You must have participation in both systems for a successful match.

Graduation – Class of 2020 Commencement will be held Fri., May 15th, beginning at 7pm in the Creative Arts Center-Morgantown.

Eastern GQ WeekMar. 2nd through Mar. 11th. Watch for emails from AAMC to complete this important survey. Bring in proof of completion during GQ Week to Jane Horst in Eastern Student Services to be entered into a door prize drawing held at the Financial Seminar on Mar. 11th. MS3 Class of 2021

V-Scans – Eastern Campus has been loaned 8 ultrasound V-Scan portable machines for student use during your rotations – 2 scanners each for Family Med, Internal Med, Pediatrics, and Surgery. The units are available for checkout in the Student Services office. Please contact Christa (christa.schwoerer.m@wvumedicine.org) or Michelle (alderm@wvumedicine.org) to sign out a unit for use on rotation.
