Peds Grand Rounds is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC. Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC. If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

BMC Tumor Board –Thur., Oct. 24th, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom. Topic: “Lung Adenocarcinoma” presented by Dr. Sam Wanko (Hem/Onc) and Dr. Tiffany Harper (Pathology).

Thoracic Oncology Education Dinner – Thur., Oct. 24th, 5:30-8:30pm, at Historic McFarland House (409 S. Queen Street, Martinsburg). Course directors for event: Dr. Sam Wanko and Dr. Mark Sullivan. Dinner and educational discussion featuring guest faculty speakers. Topics: “Update on Lung and Esophageal Cancer” presented by Dr. Ghulam Abbas; and “Myasthenia Gravis and Surgery for Thymus” presented by Dr. Alper Toker. Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, May 8th-Dec. 18th, 5:00-7:00pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room. Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness. Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm. New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg. To volunteer or for additional information: Cosby Potter-Davis – cosby.davis@comcast.net

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town. 3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am. Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Help needed with setup, tear-down, cooking process, and interacting with patrons. For additional information, contact: Dr. Audreanna James (audreanna.james@wvumedicine.org). Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room. Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity. MS4 Class of 2020

MS3 Class of 2021

GTR 0.5 – As a reminder, the GTR 0.5 tri-campus videoconference (MDTV) session will be held on Wed., Oct. 30th, 4-5:30pm, in the Eastern HSC Multimedia Classroom. This session is required for 3rd year medical students. Be sure to advise your preceptor that you will need to leave clinic early to attend this mandatory school event. If you need a note for your preceptor, contact Eastern Student Services at 304-596-6312.

Nau Module – Just a reminder, you must complete an IV start on a patient in either BMC’s Same-Day Surgery or the ER. This procedure will be graded by supervising staff. The grade forms to be used are located in your mailboxes in the Student Study Area, so please be sure to stop and pick them up this week.

Case Logs – Be sure you are logging your procedures in E-value regularly as you progress through your 3rd year clerkships. These will be reviewed by clerkship directors periodically during the semester.

V-Scans – Eastern Campus has been loaned 8 ultrasound V-Scan portable machines for student use during your rotations – 2 scanners each for Family Med, Internal Med, Pediatrics, and Surgery. The units are available for checkout in the Student Services office. Please contact Christa (christa.schwoerer.m@wvumedicine.org) or Michelle (alderm@wvumedicine.org) to sign out a unit for use on rotation.
