Eastern Happenings -- Oct. 8, 2019

Shout out to the students who participated in Freedom’s Run on October 5th.  Some students (MSIV Clara Beth Novotny, MSIII Ching Xie) participated in the race, while others (MSIII Jennifer Kordell, OMSIII Molly Storm) volunteered their time to assist with the medical tent at the finish line.  Your contribution in each capacity was much appreciated during this annual fun event!!

Important Dates:

Peds Grand Rounds is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC. Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC. If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, May 8th-Dec. 18th, 5:00-7:00pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room.  Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness.  Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities:

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm. New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg. To volunteer or for additional information: Cosby Potter-Davis – cosby.davis@comcast.net

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town. 3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am. Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room. Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity. Interviews – With the recent opening of the 2019 residency interview season, please be sure to contact Dr. Cannarella (cannarellar@wvumedicine.org) or Jane Horst (horstj@wvumedicine.org) and advise them as soon as possible with regard to the number of interviews you have lined up.

 

MS3 Class of 2021

Nau Module – Just a reminder, you must complete an IV start on a patient in either BMC’s Same-Day Surgery or the ER.  This procedure will be graded by supervising staff.  The grade forms to be used are located in your mailboxes in the Student Study Area, so please be sure to stop and pick them up this week.

Case Logs – Be sure you are logging your procedures in E-value regularly as you progress through your 3rd year clerkships.  These will be reviewed by clerkship directors periodically during the semester.

V-Scans – Eastern Campus has been loaned 8 ultrasound V-Scan portable machines for student use during your rotations – 2 scanners each for Family Med, Internal Med, Pediatrics, and Surgery.  The units are available for checkout in the Student Services office.  Please contact Christa (christa.schwoerer.m@wvumedicine.org) or Michelle (alderm@wvumedicine.org) to sign out a unit for use on rotation.
