Endocrinology Highlights and Accomplishments
The physicians and advanced practice providers in the Department of Medicine, Section of Endocrinology work tirelessly to provide excellent care to our patients, educate fellows, residents, and medical students, conduct research, and serve on various committees at the department and hospital levels to help improve patient care and education. The entire section has worked together to plan and host the WVU Medicine Diabetes Symposium which will take place on November 18, 2022 and intends to provide a thorough, comprehensive education on diabetes mellitus to providers of multiple specialties.
Individually, the providers in our section continue to establish themselves as leaders and educators in the field of endocrinology and within WVU Medicine.
Dr. Adnan Haider was recently promoted to Associate Professor and received the Outstanding Clinical Faculty award at the Department of Medicine awards banquet. In addition to presenting Grand Rounds this year, Dr. Jennifer Turner has taken on the role of Assistant Program Director for the endocrinology fellowship and authored two chapters in Dr. Barghouthi and Dr. Perini’s pregnancy book. Dr. Smita Kumar gave an excellent presentation at the national American Diabetes Association (ADA) conference this year.
Dr. Jennifer Giordano and Dr. Jeffrey Rico are working with the endocrinology fellows as part of the Fellow Research Academy to develop a project outlining outcomes in patients with diabetes mellitus who are evaluated through a telemedicine platform. In addition, Dr. Giordano selflessly volunteers at the Health Right clinic to evaluate and treat patients with financial or social difficulties.
Dr. Giordano, Renee Schwertfeger, NP, and our Diabetes Education Center Coordinator, Emily Smaniotto, invested countless hours of their time in outreach and fundraising in order to help our Diabetes Symposium succeed. In addition, Renee spearheaded our diabetes group visits which take place at the Suncrest Towne Centre Endocrinology clinic and are led by Renee, Dr. Rico, Dr. Turner, Dr. Giordano, and Dr. Kumar.
Melissa Phillips, NP and Kylene Lovejoy, NP helped create and run our APP Inpatient Diabetes Consult service which enables our section to assist even more patients and primary services with management of diabetes and to coordinate hospital discharge follow up appointments for these patients. The section welcomes recently-hired Samantha Rubin, NP who will join Melissa and Kylene in this role as well. Both Melissa and Kylene won the Outstanding APP award in 2021, further highlighting their hard work and dedication to helping patients and providers throughout WVU Medicine.
