Former Department of Medicine chair named associate dean for clinical affairs

Arif Sarwari, M.D., former Department of Medicine chair and current professor of infectious diseases, has been named the associate dean for clinical affairs in WVU’s School of Medicine, effective July 1, 2022.

This new position works closely with Michael Edmond, M.D., WVU Medicine’s chief medical officer and vice dean of clinical affairs, in advancing the clinical mission and programs within the School of Medicine. Dr. Sarwari will continue to serve as a clinician, teacher and scholar for the Department of Medicine.

In addition to his chair role, Sarwari formerly served an associate professor in the section of infectious diseases in the Department of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, and completed his residency in internal medicine at WVU Medicine’s J.W Ruby Memorial Hospital, where he served as a chief resident. He also completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Maryland, as well as a master of science degree in epidemiology and preventative medicine. Since returning to WVU as a faculty member, he has completed a master’s degree in business administration.

Sarwari also serves as the medical director of the WVU Positive Health Clinic. He has been the recipient of numerous School of Medicine teaching awards such as Outstanding Teacher, Outstanding Faculty, Best Attending Physician, Clinician of the Year and was honored with the Herbert S. Waxman Award for Outstanding Medical Student Educator by the American College of Physicians.
