Huffmyer named School of Medicine assistant ACGME DIO
Julie Huffmyer, M.D., has been named the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education assistant designated institution official for the West Virginia University School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education program effective by July 1.
Dr. Huffmyer, professor and vice chair in the Department of Anesthesiology, brings more than a decade of residency program leadership to the position. Together, with Sarah Sofka, M.D., associate dean and DIO, she’ll oversee and expand on the School of Medicine’s residency and fellowship programs.
“I’m excited to have a proven leader who is passionate about education and has our residents and fellows at heart,” said Dr. Sofka. “She’ll be critical as we continue to work towards our vision of being a leader in graduate medical education through innovation and scholarship.”
WVU is home to the largest quantity of specialty residency programs in the state, offering 92 specialty programs to its more than 640 resident and fellow trainees within the WVU Medicine hospital system.
Huffmyer graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2004 and completed her anesthesiology residency at the University of Virginia, including a chief resident year in 2008. After residency, she joined the faculty at UVA and served as a cardiac and liver anesthesiologist there until 2022 before joining WVU.
She is involved in the global anesthesiology community. She served as the immediate past secretary of the Society of Academic Associations of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine in the Core Program Director Council. She is an assistant editor for Anesthesia & Analgesia, a monthly peer-reviewed medical journal covering anesthesia, pain management and perioperative medicine.
