Mapping the Future of Drug Discovery: Spotlight on Dr. Shian Liu

Dr. Shian Liu joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine in July 2025 as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Liu states, “I was drawn to WVU because of its strong commitment to research and student mentorship, as well as the collaborative environment across departments. It felt like a place where I could both grow professionally and contribute meaningfully.” He completed his undergraduate degree at Capital Normal University in China and earned his graduate degree at Texas A&M University. Dr. Liu’s postdoctoral research was completed at Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Liu’s research focuses on elucidating the molecular architectures of membrane-bound receptors, which represent the largest group of drug targets. “Based on their structures, I am also interested in developing small-molecule or biological therapeutics targeting these receptors,” Liu states.

Dr. Liu was recently awarded an R35 grant from the NIH titled “Ligand Specificity and Activation of Receptor Guanylyl Cyclases.” The award total is $1,810,707 and will continue until 2031. This research project will advance fundamental understanding of the molecular structures and activation mechanisms of two membrane receptors, guanylyl cyclase-B (GC-B) and guanylyl cyclase-C (GC-C), which are associated with skeletal growth disorders and diarrheal diseases, respectively. By employing cryo-electron microscopy and functional studies, his lab aims to reveal the ligand-receptor interactions and key residues determining ligand specificity under physiological and pathophysiological conditions. This information will address gaps in our understanding of the activation mechanisms of these receptors and guide next-generation therapeutic interventions.

Interview with Dr. Shian Liu:

How did you get into your field of science? Was there a specific “a-ha” moment?
I became interested in my field through a mix of curiosity and hands-on lab experiences during my early education. There wasn’t one single “a-ha” moment, but rather a series of small discoveries that made me realize how much I enjoyed asking questions and finding answers using a series of biophysical and structural biology approaches.

What are you hoping to accomplish at WVU?
I hope to advance my research in meaningful ways while also mentoring students and helping prepare the next generation of scientists. Contributing to impactful discoveries and fostering collaboration are key goals for me.

What is special about WVU to you?
What stands out is the sense of community and support. There’s a genuine focus on student success and collaboration, which creates a really positive and productive environment.

What would you tell a new student going into the BMM program?
Stay curious and don’t be afraid to ask questions or try new things. Work hard. Read more.

What is the most rewarding part of your position?
Mentoring students and seeing their growth is incredibly rewarding. It’s exciting to watch them develop skills and confidence over time.

What is the best thing about being in your career/what you do?
The ability to continuously learn and discover new things is the best part. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to solve interesting problems.
