Nancy Sanders Memorial Faculty Research Abroad Grant winners announced
The Global Engagement Office at WVU Health Sciences has announced winners of the annual pilot grant and student travel awards. Named in memory of Nancy Sanders, an essential figure of the Global Health Program at WVU who passed away suddenly in 2017, these awards aim to support students and faculty in creating long-term, self-sustaining global activities and participating in globally focused field placements or community-based research projects.
The Nancy Sanders Memorial Faculty Research Abroad Grant focuses on the development or expansion of global health scholarly projects, including collaborative research projects involving faculty in different schools and/or institutions of Health Sciences willing to collaborate with their international colleagues on common healthcare related disciplines that are currently challenging in West Virginia. One award of up to $10,000.00 for one year is available for supporting faculty research collaboration efforts abroad.
The 2018 Faculty Research Abroad Grant recipient is Amelia Adcock, M.D., assistant professor in the
Department of Neurology, associate director of the WVU Stroke Center and director of the WVU Center for Teleneurology and Telestroke. Her proposal will fund grassroots neurologic care in rural Guatemala through a combination in-person and telehealth curriculum that is widely accessible in developing areas. The long-term goal of this project is to create a WVU Global Neurology program to enhance resident and faculty knowledge of global health as well as serve as serve as ongoing resources for the Guatemalan community throughout the year. Dr. Adcock serves as the principle investigator on this project and is joined by Ann Murray, M.D., assistant rofessor of neurology and Student Clerkship Director; Jessica Frey, M.D., neurology resident, and Maggie Jaynes, M.D., professor/chief, Section of Pediatric Neurology.
The Nancy Sanders Memorial Student Study Abroad Travel Award is a competitive grant opportunity for students currently enrolled in degree programs at Health Sciences. The purpose of these awards is to support expenses related to participation in global health field placements as well as an introductory approach to healthcare related or community-based research projects. The intent of this funding is geared towards promoting a set of basic or community-based research tools that will help the students to objectively and scientifically approach larger and more complex research projects in the future. These awards will utilize a self-nomination process and are open to any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate full-time student in good standing at the Health Sciences.
