NFL Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Allen Sills, MD, visited WVU’s campus on Friday (May 3), as part of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) Concussion and Brain Injury Center’s ongoing work with the NFL. His visit was a collaboration between the RNI and WVU Sports Medicine.
During his visit, Dr. Sills gave a lecture during Neurology Grand Rounds, providing an update on the innovations happening in the NFL to make football safer for athletes. He gave tremendous insight into new concussion protocol and ways to prevent head injury from occurring.
Dr. Sills has served as the NFL CMO since 2017, collaborating closely with medical staff from teams across the league, as well as the NFL Players Association and its advisors. He also works closely with the many medical and scientific experts who comprise the NFL's medical committees, including our own Javier C'ardenas, MD. In this role, he orchestrates efforts with these experts to spearhead the league's initiatives aimed at advancing player safety both on and off the field. This includes advocating for rule changes, enhancing equipment, and implementing comprehensive injury reduction strategies.
