No One Dies Alone program resumes at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital

The No One Dies Alone (NODA) program has resumed services at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.

NODA is a nation-wide program in which volunteers offer companionship to those who are dying. When hospital patients have no one to visit them and are nearing death, volunteers keep vigil at their bedsides by holding their hand, talking to them, or just being present to ensure they won’t be alone during the dying process.

To activate a NODA Vigil, the patient must meet ALL the vigil activation criteria:

  • The patient is expected to die within 72 hours.
  • The patient has "Do Not Resuscitate" orders.
  • The patient has been placed on comfort care (if appropriate).
  • The patient has no family or friends and/or no one is able to be present.

To activate a NODA Vigil, please call the Vigil Coordinator at 304-216-7059. The NODA Vigil Coordinator will respond to your call, gather patient information, and begin calling volunteer compassionate companions to sit at the patient’s bedside. NODA is a volunteer program. Every effort will be made to provide a volunteer to support the patient; however, volunteer availability may be limited due to COVID restrictions.
