Nursing professor furthers her gerontology research in Japan

Dr. Ann Hendrickson, a clinical assistant professor at the WVU School of Nursing, visited the Hamamatsu Municipal Nursing School in Japan this summer to learn more about their curriculum related to geriatrics and to observe how they care for older adults. The two nursing schools have had a collaborative partnership since 2019.

As a professor since 2022, Hendrickson teaches undergraduate and graduate students, including a senior undergraduate elective called Core Concepts in Gerontological Nursing. Her research focuses on postoperative delirium and older adults, and she recently published a paper, “Implementing a Delirium Protocol Bundle for Older Adult Post Op Patients with Hip Fracture.”

During her time there, Hendrickson attended an undergraduate nursing class on geriatrics and toured a hospital dedicated to the care of older adults.

“I was excited to see their state-of-the-art rehabilitation department as well as a comprehensive dementia care unit,” Hendrickson said. “The nursing school curriculum included unique and innovative ways to care for older adults while preserving local and national culture.”

She added, “I look forward to continuing my connection with the nursing faculty at the Hamamatsu Municipal Nursing School and learning more from them on geriatric care in Japan.”
