School of Medicine M.D. Alumni Weekend slated for Oct. 18 – 19

The West Virginia University School of Medicine is inviting M.D. alumni back to Morgantown for the annual Alumni Weekend event, which takes place during the University’s Homecoming Weekend on Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19. 

Alumni of the program will return to campus from across the country for the opportunity to celebrate achievements, reconnect and participate in a full slate of activities that culminates with the Kansas State football game.

The classes of 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, 2019 will celebrate reunions along with alumni from the “two-year medical school.”

 

Friday events – Homecoming parade, alumni reception, formal awards banquet

The Friday festivities start in downtown Morgantown on High Street at 6 p.m. as participants can watch the WVU Homecoming Parade with front-row seats at the Historic Hotel Morgan, which hosts the activities for the weekend.

Following the parade, the M.D. Alumni Banquet begins with the alumni recpetion at 7 p.m. and is followed by the formal banquet.

At the banquet, the Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented to this year’s recipient, Laurie Guttmann, M.D., an alumna of the class of 1986.

Dr. Gutmann is professor and chair of neurology and co-director of the Neuroscience Institute at the Indiana University School of Medicine, leading a statewide multidisciplinary approach to research, education and clinical care.

She is a part of the Clinical Coordinating Center for the NeuroNEXT (National Institutes of Health Network of Excellence for Neurologic Clinical Trials), in charge of site support and management for the network, assisting with recruitment, retention and diversity in trials plus network educational initiatives.

In addition, she has been co-director of the NIH/ NINDS funded Clinical Trials Methodology Course for over a decade, working with clinical researchers designing their first clinical trials.

She spent 20 years as faculty at WVU before joining the University of Iowa where she has spent eight years as professor and vice chair of clinical research. She also worked for four years as a program officer in the NINDS/NIH Extramural Office of Clinical Research.

 

Saturday events – tailgates, football and viewing parties

At 9 a.m. tailgating commences in the Hotel Morgan ballroom and there will be a chartered bus to the stadium for those who wish to see the Mountaineers take on the Kansas State Wildcats at Milan Puskar Stadium.

For those not attending the game, the School of Medicine Alumni Association will have a football viewing party at Hotel Morgan. A post-game buffet will kick off at 6 p.m. that evening to conclude the weekend.

Pre-registration is required for the alumni and tailgate events and can be done online. A full schedule of activities is also available.
