The Wright Stuff: A reward for dedicated nurses
A message to the WVU Medicine family

Your feedback is very important to me, even if it’s just a hallway conversation, an email, or an exchange at one of my breakfast meetings.
With that in mind, I’m happy to announce an exciting initiative, one geared toward rewarding long-time employees within the largest segment of the WVU Medicine workforce -- nursing.
In creating a new, system-wide Work-Life Balance Program, we are offering our senior nurses a reduced work schedule, along with other perks. This initiative is based on feedback we received from senior nurses, not only through the Employee Engagement Survey but through focus groups.
I’ve got great respect for nurses, particularly the ones who have been on the front lines, providing direct patient care at the bedside for years. It’s one of the toughest positions to fill and retain within our organization. We need you now more than ever, and we believe this initiative will give you incentive to stick around for a few more years.
To kick things off, the Work-Life Balance Program, which launched Sept. 30, will be targeted to direct/clinical care, inpatient registered nurses. Through the program, eligible nurses can:
- Reduce their schedule to a minimum of 24-32 per hours a week (working four eight-hour shifts or two 12-hour shifts)
- Use PTO to take a break in service
- Access retirement funds to supplement income
While taking advantage of these perks, they can also maintain service and seniority, and remain full-time, benefit-eligible for medical, dental, disability, vision, and tuition. Visit the HR1Source website for more details, including eligibility criteria. Click on “Career Opportunities” once you log in to the site.
If this new recognition program is successful, we may consider expanding it to other roles.
This is just one of the new recognition programs we will be launching system-wide this fall. They are all the result of feedback we received from you.
Always remember that benefits like these were created from your ideas. Keep them coming!
