Two Alumni Earn Board Certification in Pediatrics

Occupational Therapy education provides graduates the opportunity to enter practice in a variety of settings including pediatrics, orthopedics, mental health, geriatrics, and more. Graduates are then able to obtain specialty certification. Beginning in 2021, the American Occupational Therapy Association began offering the Advanced Certification Program to replace the previous peer-reviewed reflective portfolio application process. Two WVU alumni are among the first exam-based Board Certified Pediatric (BCP) occupational therapists in West Virginia.  This distinction has been accomplished by fewer than 1% of all occupational therapists nationally.

Breanna Adkins, MOT, OTR/L, BCP is an assistant professor in the WVU Division of Occupational Therapy. Adkins specializes in using the coaching model to engage families in their child's plan of care, with a special emphasis on feeding difficulties in young children. An alumnus of the WVU Division of OT class of 2014, Adkins currently instructs coursework related to normal development across the lifespan and pediatric assessment.

Annika Lafferty, MOT, OTR/L, BCP is the Chief Operating Officer at Best Life Therapy. She organizes all aspects of therapist mentoring and delivery of services throughout WV schools, early intervention, and tele practice. Lafferty also specializes in assessing and implementing interventions to children in the school system. Lafferty is an alumnus of the Class of 2014 and currently practices in the schools in WV.

Congratulations! We are proud of your accomplishments!
