Williams recognized with 2023 Michele Raible Distinguished Achievement Award in Undergraduate Medical Education from Association of Pathology Chairs.

H. James Williams, M.D., Professor in the Department of Pathology, Anatomy and Laboratory Medicine has been chosen to receive the 2023 Michele Raible Distinguished Achievement Award in Undergraduate Medical Education from the Association of Pathology Chairs (APC).

This prestigious award recognizes pathology educators who have made significant contributions at local, regional, and national levels in undergraduate medical education (UME).

“We were most pleased to see Dr. Williams receive this national recognition,” said Norman Ferrari, M.D., Chair for the Department of Medical Education and Vice Dean for Medical Education. “He has had a major impact on pathology education for our MD degree students and the only pathology residency program in the state of West Virginia.”

Dr. Williams has been a WVU faculty member since 2003 serving as Director, Anatomic Pathology 2003 – 2007 and Vice Chair of Educational Programs in Pathology 2007 – 2017.  He served as the Medical Director of the second year Pathology Course 2004 – 2011.  Dr. Williams has been an active participant in the Association of Pathology Chairs (APC) in which he served on the UMEDS Council for five years including two years as the Chair, UMEDS.

Dr. Williams completed his medical degree from the University of Mississippi and his Anatomic and Clinical Pathology training at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.  After finishing his time in the military as Head of the Laboratory at Naval Hospital, Millington, Tennessee, he went to Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas for four years as Director, Anatomic Pathology.  He then went to East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina as Director, Surgical Pathology for five years.  Originally from Colorado, Dr. Williams was drawn by the mountains to West Virginia University in 2003.

While actively involved in pathology education at the national level with numerous presentations and publications, Dr. Williams has most enjoyed the teaching and mentoring of medical students, residents, and fellows at the microscope.

Dr. Williams will be recognized at the 2023 Association of Pathology Chairs Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois this July.
