Willowdale garage, Med Center Drive pedestrian bridge scheduled to open Aug. 30

Two WVU Medicine construction projects are scheduled to finish on Aug. 30.

The Willowdale parking garage, which features 810 spaces, is scheduled to open, along with a pedestrian bridge adjacent from parking lots C10 and D, and near the stairs connecting to employee parking lots F1-F4 near Milan Puskar Stadium.

The pedestrian bridge, spanning Medical Center Drive, is being built to allow employees walking from F1-F4 to get to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital entrances more safely and efficiently. To allow access to the stadium sidewalk from D lot, the stairs will remain in place for at least one football season to evaluate usage.

The Willowdale lot will also feature a pedestrian bridge that will allow pedestrians to cross over to the stadium lots safely. Also, new traffic signal lights will be installed at the intersection of Willowdale and Valley View. Work is beginning on that phase of the project now.

During construction of the Willowdale garage, there will be intermittent traffic delays through July, as precast parking garage structures are hauled to the site up to 35 times a day. All traffic, except for local traffic, is urged to use alternate routes in and around this location during this time frame.

Irwin Street will close from June 19-July 3 with local traffic on Village Drive permitted to pass.

Valley View Ave. will close from June 24-27.

There will also be delays of approximately 15 minutes on Willowdale/Don Nehlen Drive from July 3-26 as a large crane is disassembled and construction begins on the Willowdale pedestrian bridge.

The Mountaineer Station II garage, being built near the Med Center PRT station, is scheduled to open in September, 2020. It will have 780 parking spaces.

As more employee parking spaces open, new areas for patient parking will be designated around the hospital. A construction project for Lot D will begin in November.
